30 Sep 2004
These ideas are designed to support practitioners in the management and use of our outdoor play system called the 'We-Go' ™ Systems. Each bag contains opportunities linked to a different aspect of the curriculum so that everything is on offer everyday.
Mathematics
- Resources... materials of different weights/lengths, simple tape measures, used to explore wind strength.
- Ideas to explore. Wind has a variable strength, mass of an object affects the way it flies, Length can be measured and can affect the way a streamer moves in the wind.
- PLOD. Creation of wind tunnels, designed inside and taken outside. Testing using fans inside to develop fastening skills.
Kn/Understanding..Technology
- Resources - papers of different weights/shapes/colours/textures, wool/weak string, masking tape, simple mark making materials used to explore kite making (scissors in adult pouch).
- Ideas to explore - Wind has a variable strength and blows in patterns; mass of an object affects the way it flies, Objects that hold air will stay airbourne for longer time.
- PLOD - Creation of bag kites, designed inside and taken outside. Creation of objects to hold onto the kite such as people, animals to explore wind strength. Use of higher surfaces to give elevation and lift.
Physical Development and Movement
- Resources - Ripping ribbon of varying lengths, dull/vibrant/metallic shades, hair scrunchies.
- Ideas to explore - Through moving ourselves we create a wind effect Creative dance/movement .Ribbon can be ripped into different widths which move in different ways.
- PLOD - Creation of wind wings, bands of pretend hair to put onto hats to move in the wind. Outdoor mirrors to watch movement outside.
Creative and Aesthetic
- Resources... variety of objects to select from to make a wind chime tree. Eg spoons, wire egg cups, foil, bells, string, a tree to hang objects from.
- Ideas to explore. Wind movement can create sound. The material an object is made from alters the sound it makes.
- PLOD. Design and construction of their own windchimes through the use of natural materials inside. Investigation into protection of wood, and metal from the elements.
Communication and language
- Resources... Fine ribbons in a variety of colours, masking tape, pencils. Card board to make small books to write into. Pale rose petals to write on and send off into the wind.
- Ideas to explore. Writing as a form of communication. Heavier objects need a stronger wind to lift them.
