Forest School Training

Mindstretchers deliver a range of regulated Forest School Qualifications. These qualifications range from levels 1-3. You can start at level 1 and progress through the stages or if you meet the minimum requirements start at a level that suits you.

 

The qualifications are as follows:

 

Level 1 Award in Introduction to Forest School Principles.

No upcoming courses at the moment.

 

This qualification is intended to introduce the candidate to the underlying ethos and ideas of Forest School and the use of the outdoors to aid learning through the unit Introduction to Forest School Principles.

 

Minimum age 14 years and no prior experience required.

 

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

 

Learners will:
Understand the Forest School approach to learning.
Be able to participate in a Forest School experience.
Understand methods of identification of woodland species.
Understand the impact of Forest School on the woodland environment.
Understand hazards at Forest School
Training with an internationally renowned training organisation – sector leading in child centred planning, learning and documentation inside, outside and beyond
Free membership of the International Association of Nature Pedagogy.

 

Course involvement level
1 day training
Portfolio to be handed in

Duration: 3 months to complete submission for certification

 

 

Level 2 Award in Forest School Programme Support.

This qualification is intended for those who wish to become an assistant Forest School Leader. The units for Level 2 include ‘Skills for the Forest School Programme Assistant and Support Learning and Development at a Forest School Programme.

 

Minimum age 16 years and some experience in Forest School advised.

 

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

 

Learners will:
Understand how a Forest School can support an individual’s learning and development.
Know how experiences can support learning and development at a Forest School.
Be able to perform the role of Assistant at a Forest School.
Understand sustainable woodland management at a Forest School.
Understand the role of risk assessment at Forest School.
Be able to carry out practical tasks at Forest School.

3 days training
Portfolio to be handed in within 6 months

Duration: 6 months to complete submission

 


 

Level 3 Award in Forest School Programme Leadership.

This qualification is intended to provide the skills and knowledge required to set up and deliver safe and effective Forest School Programmes, for those who wish to become Forest School Leaders. The units for Level 3 are ‘Delivery of a Forest School Programme,’ ‘Learning and Development at a Forest School Programme,’ ‘Planning a Forest School Programme,’ ‘Forest School Programme and the Woodland Environment’ and ‘Practical Skills for a Forest School Programme.’

 

Minimum age 19 years and experience in Forest School, youth work or education advised.

Learners will:
Understand the structures of woodlands.
Know how to identify a range of flora and fauna
Understand the importance of flora and fauna identification for the Forest School Programme leader
Understand the management of woodlands as a sustainable learning environment
Be able to deliver a Forest School programme.
Be able to assess the impact of Forest School on participants
Be able to evaluate a Forest School programme
Understand relevant theories of learning and development and their application to a Forest School programme.
Understand how a Forest School programme can support holistic development and learning.
Understand the impact of behaviour on learning and development at a Forest School programme.
Be able to reflect on your own Forest School training.
Understand the development of the Forest School ethos.
Understand the ecological impact of a Forest School programme.
Know the relevant policies and procedures required for a Forest School programme.
Be able to plan a Forest School programme
Be able to facilitate a range of woodland skills appropriate to a Forest School programme.
Be able to facilitate campfire management appropriate to a Forest School programme.
